I'm helping John with a few things today. I tried to compile one of the project's he's been working on and was presented with a cryptic error message:

Error in debug compilation for WebApp project "Unable to write to output file '[project path]\obj\Debug\[website].pbd' : System Error &H80004005&"

Turns out there was a file in the project that didn't exist (little exclamation mark on the file in solution explorer). Easy fix - remove the file and all is happy.

I went and visited my old friend Dave yesterday and got to play with his 4 lane scalectric track he has been setting up in the garage.

Been meaning to post some of the girl geek events around the place..but have been slack / travelling a bit.  So I'll just show them all in one post instead :)

We've been a bit lax in our blogging the last week...mainly because we were travelling around for Remix Australia.  For those who missed out you missed an awesome event! So I'll use this post to give my highlights of the events and to answer some of the common questions we were getting from you all around the ASP.Net Virtual Earth Control and the upcoming Contoso Bank Quick App.  We had a great time and it was really good for us both to be allowed to show some unreleased bits for the first (and 2nd if you were in Melbourne) time ever!

We've had some really nice emails from the students at QUT after we did a guest lecture earlier in the week. Some of the follow-up questions and comments were around getting a job while studying and how to get a foot in the door.  While I answered these to the best of my ability, I haven't been a grad and I haven't been part of grad intake processes for a few years.  So I thought I'd share my thoughts and put it out there for the rest of you to comment on your tips and advice for those starting out in the world of IT.

I know I haven't posted something code related on Virtual Earth in ages, rest assured I've just been very busy.

The 4 green boxes are the screen bounds passed to the server for data in many of my older virtual earth applications and samples, the 2 blue boxes are the standardised bounds I actually send these days.

This is the new JavaScript code I use to get the current screen bounds:

 Remix is coming to Australia - double strength.  There are 2 separate events in Australia this year. 20th May in Sydney, and 22nd in Melbourne. We're presenting a couple of demos at both events in the Windows Live session with Angus Logan. 

I posted my first dev article on liveside.net on the weekend, it all about making a panorama, using deep zoom, virtual earth and silverlight streaming.

Today I checked the reports on usage:

5,644 hits on the sample application in a few days! That could have been my entire server's bandwidth for the month (50GB).

  We were invited to present a guest lecture (2hrs) at QUT today on Web Applications in the Real World.  Our brief - show some cool demos and tell some stories about working in the real world.
